About Canticum Novum
Canticum Novum unites WELS musicians to proclaim Christ through sacred choral music.
Proclaiming the name of Christ through the choral art
Our Mission
Canticum Novum is a WELS chamber choir devoted to proclaiming Christ through sacred choral music. We strive for artistic excellence that reflects the gospel and encourages others in their own musical service.
Our History
Founded in 2005 following the WELS National Conference on Worship, Music, and the Arts, Canticum Novum was formed by musicians seeking a choir built on independent preparation, musical rigor, and gospel-centered purpose.
In 2006, the ensemble presented its first services under the direction of founder Mike Marquardt. Since then, the choir has grown under current artistic director Jonathan Laabs, expanding its reach and programming while maintaining its mission.
Our Distinct Approach
Canticum Novum brings together skilled singers from WELS congregations across the Midwest and beyond. Members prepare independently and gather annually for a weeklong retreat focused on intensive rehearsals, fellowship, and worship through music.
OUR TEAM
Canticum Novum is led by faithful volunteers and musicians who coordinate each season’s rehearsals, concerts, and outreach.
